So pray for me, and hopefully I can break my usual yearly writing cycle which goes: write like one poem every couple of months then try and tackle nanowrimo with no preparation and drag out like 30,000 words that I never want to see again of a project I'm not that invested in.

I wrote some fic!
August 9th, 2016 11:21 pmIt's a pretty trashy piece of Raven Cycle smut, but it is also the first piece of explicit writing I have ever written (what can I say, these boys were just asking for an ill-advised sexual encounter), so that was an adventure.
Better This Way (3258 words) by Alasse_Irena
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Raven Cycle - Maggie Stiefvater
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Joseph Kavinsky/Ronan Lynch
Characters: Ronan Lynch, Joseph Kavinsky
Additional Tags: Sex on a Car, is apparently a separate tag to sex in a car, good job being so precise everyone, Blow Jobs, Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence
Summary: There’s something else in knowing that when he comes, it’s because of Kavinsky’s calloused fingers on his skin. It ought to be terrible, but it makes sense - in a way Gansey couldn’t - Gansey shouldn’t - understand.
Or: the AU where Ronan doesn't drive away after he dreams a replacement Camaro.
(no subject)
March 24th, 2016 01:28 pmThis all happened because I was at her place the other day, rereading the Dream Thieves for the purpose of planning a fic (we will see how this goes; I am not the best at finishing projects, but I have high hopes), and I mentioned to her that there was homoerotic drag racing, which was of course, exactly her cup of tea.
Anyway, the upshot of this is that I ordered all three current books on Book Depository, and preordered the final one - and they arrived at my house yesterday! This is very exciting. I have never ordered a book online before, and it's like shopping but without the effort of shopping. You just look at things, and then you click on them, and then they appear. (Okay, so admittedly some of your money goes away in this process also, but less than if I had done it in person, and also I have a job now!) And now I am ready to fill them with sticky notes!
In unrelated things, I keep seeing those soulmates AU posts appear on Tumblr. You know the ones: "imagine if the world was black and white, and you only started seeing in colour when you met your soulmate", "imagine if their first words to you were tattooed on your wrist", "imagine if it was their last words".
You may want to skip the rest of this paragraph if you enjoy those AUs, unless you really want to explain the appeal to me, because I don't get the appeal, and honestly the implications of the soulmates idea make me angry.
The idea that there's a predestined someone out there for you seems....well, for one, it seems like the opposite of romantic, a relationship that only exists because it was predetermined. It's missing all the getting-to-know-each-other and the deciding-if-this-is-right-for-you parts. But then if people try and add any of that gradual developing stuff, it just seems to emphasise the lack of free will. These people aren't into each other yet: they're just here because they know this is their only option for a romantic relationship; it's written in the stars that nothing else will be as good. I am just puzzled. I would much prefer to read a story where two people choose each other, out of all the people they've ever met, because they've looked around and figured out that this relationship is going to be what they want, than one where people meet each other and know immediately that they're going to have to learn to love this person, because no-one else is going to make them feel as strongly.
Romance is just...not magic, or at least, not to me, and I wish more people would start showing it as stories about people who like the way they fit together, rather than stories about people who feel *mystically drawn to each other* or whose relationships were predestined before they even met.
A question
October 13th, 2015 03:15 pmWhen you put a memory in a Pensieve, do you still hold it in your head, or is it only in the Pensieve now? Dumbledore kind of implies the latter when he talked about using it when your head seems too full of stuff, but I'm not sure...
A meme about fic!
May 26th, 2015 09:46 pm(Nabbed this from
![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
There are a whole assortment of fics I could maybe sort-of reference, like the "We've always been cousins" Merry/Pippin fic, and a long LotR self-insert fanfiction whose name and author I can't really remember, but this list is limited to things I could track down or recall at least enough to title.
1. The Heart Wants What It Wants by MandyQ
A Lucius/Narcissa romance, which, in my memory, was slow, well-characterised, and thoughtful. I have no idea whether it holds up today, but fourteen-year-old me was really struck by it.
2. Doctor Who Season Four by aria
A long plotty Doctor/Master fic - ultimately a fix-fic for season three, wherein the Master lives and is taken in by the Doctor, and plot ensues.
3. the naming of things by aria
The Academy-era Doctor Who fic to which all other Doctor/Master fics are compared to. Possibly my favourite fic ever.
4. Chosen Man by sineala
I loved Eagle of the Ninth as a child, and when I recently discovered that it had long slow-burn plotty romance fanfiction, I was beyond delighted.
5. The Not Remotely Secret Memoirs of Alexander the Great, Aged 13¾ by arysteia
Alexander the Great writes an arrogant self-absorbed teenage diary and wishes he was Achilles. I feel like the premise is unique enough on its own.
6. Unsteady Ground by Lisse
The Hetalia/1984 crossover you never knew you wanted and still have nightmares about.
7. Steinway!verse by toomuchplor
A long Arthur/Eames series. They're both music students. This one sticks in my head because it was the first fic a very good friend of mine recommended to me.
8. No Sleepers Must Sleep and Like a Ruthless Force by Fahye
Lucy Saxon has a story, and also agency. This is one of those things I never realised Doctor Who series 3 was missing until I found.
9. Mal du siècle by ColonelDespard
I am not usually one for the tragic, and god knows Les Mis doesn't need bonus tragedy, but, um, this one just worked for me.
10. This last one I cannot currently find, but it was a fic in which the Master travelled back in time to seduce a young Doctor by way of pretending to be his lecturer. I think time travel used for totally devious purposes just stuck with me.

So, if podfic is your thing, and Carmilla (the web series) is also your thing, it is here for your listening pleasure. The original is linked at the podfic, in case podfic is not your thing, or you want to leave me feedback.
In other news, I am writing fic for
![[community profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/community.png)
In other other news, I am in the middle of reading a long and plotty Star Trek fic, Leave No Soul Behind. It involves an AU wherein Spock and Kirk (and assorted others, but yes, this is shippy fic) are space ambulance officers. I have a RL friend who is very emotionally invested in this fic, and it is indeed well-written and readable, but being only halfway through I can't really speak for the emotional impact yet.
On this note, the thing which brought this to my attention was

Chosen Man (116551 words) by Sineala
Chapters: 5/5
Fandom: The Eagle | The Eagle of the Ninth (2011)
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence
Relationships: Marcus Flavius Aquila/Esca Mac Cunoval
Characters: Marcus Flavius Aquila, Esca Mac Cunoval, Original Characters
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe, Alternate Universe - Military, Canon Era, First Time, Loyalty, Shame, Submission, Romance, Action/Adventure
Series: Part 1 of Chosen Man
Summary: The son of the man who lost the Eagle of the Ninth would never be allowed a first command of his very own fort, would he? Marcus is posted not to Isca Dumnoniorum, but to a wretched and run-down garrison north of the Wall. There he finds that he is the new centurion of a group of scouts and spies, all of them British. He has few supplies and no experience. His men distrust him. His superiors despise him. His second-in-command is an incompetent drunkard. And the local tribes are determined to kill all of them. But the worst thing of all is one of Marcus' soldiers. He is an enigmatic, dangerous, and insubordinate man by the name of Esca, who makes Marcus yearn for terrifying things he has never before wanted and can never, ever let himself have...
And then there was cute holiday-themed Saturnalia fluff. So we should all go and read this fic.
In other news, I am still looking at my bingo card and telling myself that thinking about it will eventually turn into do something about it...
A lot of people seem to do New Year's Resolution type posts at this time of year, but this is not really my thing. Although, I have seen some fun reading challenges around, and the fandom snowflake thing, so I do intend to do certain things in the new year. For the sake of accountability, it is worth posting here that I am in the middle of writing a silly university AU Attack on Titan fic. Aside from Yuletide, I am shockingly bad at finishing things, so maybe this will help.
(Speaking of, does anyone have any fanfic challenges or exchanges they want to recommend or promote to me? I like the feeling of actually finishing and uploading fic.)
And now we are on to Yuletide, time for my shockingly late reveal post!
I wrote three fics this year, which is more than any of the other times I've participated.
Another Opportunity (2903 words) by Alasse_Irena
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Ancient History RPF
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Hannibal Barca, Scipio Africanus
Additional Tags: Reincarnation
Summary: In which it takes several lifetimes for Hannibal and Scipio to arrange a dinner date. Reincarnation AU.
This was my actual assignment. It was a great deal of fun to write, and I did a tonne more research than was strictly necessary, and I was very anxious when I uploaded it, but my recipient seems to have liked it a lot, and so do other people, so now I get to feel proud and relieved.
Having made my last minute edits to that one about twelve hours before the collection opened on Christmas Day, I thought it might be fun to spend the remaining time fulfilling a few other prompts. I'd had good intentions of writing more than one fic this year, and I am very surprised to say, considering the twelve hours (during which I also slept some), that I succeeded.
This next one was for a RL friend who, hilariously, does not yet seem to have realised that it was me who wrote it for her, even though before I did I watched the last ten episodes or so while on IM with her. It'll hit her eventually. Or I'll have to tell her.
if you catch me eating eyeballs (1124 words) by Alasse_Irena
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Carmilla (Web Series)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: LaFontaine (Carmilla Web Series), Lola Perry
Additional Tags: Friendship, Misses Clause Challenge
Summary: Perry considers nearly every event in her life to be LaFontaine’s fault. This explains how someone so determined to be normal ended up at an education institution renowned for weirdness.
And finally:
The Muse's First Job (1312 words) by Alasse_Irena
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: @WorstMuse
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Worst Muse (@WorstMuse), Original Character
Summary: In which Worst Muse inspires a struggling author.
I made a post a little while ago, before reveals, where I recommended the entire @WorstMuse category to people. This was a slightly awkward thing to do, as it included my own fic, but I wasn't allowed to tell anyone yet. So, consider that recommendation to refer to all the other fic in this fandom. For some reason it turned out to be an absolute gem of a fandom.
Yuletide: Part II
December 26th, 2014 11:00 pmHere is a link to my last delightful little treat, which is every bit as good as the two I received from the main collection: The Still-Wet Ink of Our Convictions
As for myself, I wrote three fics, about which I am not allowed to speak for another few days, of course. I am terrible at secrets, and like talking about my writing, so this is me biting my tongue for a little while.
But anyway, I have had a truly excellent Yuletide!
In other news, my sister and a friend and I have been watching Shingeki no Kyojin. Although I am still a little bit iffy about my ability to take seriously an enemy which is comical-looking giant people with an insatiable hunger for flesh, the show is doing a devastatingly brilliant job at making me cry about the characters anyway. Traumatised child soldiers! People who are really really good at their jobs! Tons of friendships and a total lack of romantic subplots! Melodrama! (Episode 18 was terrible. Other than that I have no complaints. Well, loads of complaints, but the good kind, where I'm really emotionally invested.)
I received two fics (and one in the Yuletide Madness collection, which I have thus not yet seen), both as delightfully and well-written as I could've possibly hoped.
Five Times Howl and Calcifer Came to an Agreement (and One They Didn't)
Onyx and Bone
Thank you to both of you, and I look forward to knowing who you are!
It appears to be summer
December 1st, 2014 11:15 amIt also means that c) I failed Nanowrimo, but I was not all that invested in my novel, so that would be the problem, and also the reason for lack of disappointment on this front.
On the Yuletide front
November 28th, 2014 03:41 pmIn terms of treats, I have one I've sort of half written - we'll see where that goes -and good intentions of having a look at a few others. There's still plenty of time, right? Usually I'm to busy scrambling to finish off my assignment to write treats, but I am hoping to do better this year.
In other news, a friend gave me a second-hand smartphone, so I am at last in the Modern Era with the rest of you.
Yuletide Recs
January 13th, 2013 10:15 pm
It has occurred to me that it's going to take me a while to go through all the Yuletide fic and make a complete list of recs, so I'm posting the start of it now.
So there you go. As you can see by "Ghost Soup", I'm up to the letter G. This could take a while, but I will be finished eventually. By the time next year's archive goes live. Or something.
In other news, I wrote a fic:
Dance Academy. After series two. So spoilers.
And received two, both for Maggie Stiefvater's Raven Boys:
Prelude in BMW
In Which Ronan Mocks Gansey After Catching Him in a Private Moment
All in all, I consider my first Yuletide a great success.
Beginnings
December 24th, 2012 07:34 pmSo, hello everyone. We'll see how I go.
