Yuletide Recs

It has occurred to me that it's going to take me a while to go through all the Yuletide fic and make a complete list of recs, so I'm posting the start of it now.

just a pawn, ready to advance

1984/The Hour crossover. Need I say more? The themes of the two sources are perfectly matched, the world of 1984 is as intriguing and terrifying as ever, and Freddie is neatly in character.

The Dancers

A strange, refreshing and unexpected noir retelling of the Twelve Dancing Princesses fairy tale. There's a lady private eye. It's great.

Seven for a Secret

Alternate endings to Disney fairytales. There’s barely a moment of lightness or happiness in these, but they are worth reading if you enjoy the dark and twisted.

Stand Still, Pause Clocks

Curse Workers trilogy - Holly Black. Genderbending transformation work, and the shenanigans of Lila and Cassel. Surprisingly sweet, especially in a world which is often so dark.

Inertia

Discworld. An interview with Sam Vimes. His slide into alcoholism and cynicism leaves more idealism behind than Vimes would have one believe. Plus the interview format is pleasing to me.

The Heart’s Wish

An adorable modern-day retelling of Aladdin. I’m not going to warn for LGBTI, but I will warn for the absence of Jasmine, in case she was your favourite character.

What Full Lips You Have (They’re Sure To Lure Someone Bad)

A dystopian world full of familiar fairy tale characters that look slightly different. For one, Little Red Riding Hood’s a boy. For two, they do crime. Kind of dark and sexy.

Building the Castle of Roses

I was reading alphabetically by fandom, so I'd read a fair few fairy tale retellings by this point, but it was tagged “closed ecological systems”, and I couldn’t go past. A version of Sleeping Beauty involving space travel.

BRIAN WILL TOO GO TO SPACE TODAY

Ghost Soup Infidel Blue. I always liked Red better, but there's so little fic for Red... Brings back memories of my fanfiction.net days.

Ghost Soup Forum Archive

Exactly what it says on the tin. Brings back memories of my forum adventures.

So there you go. As you can see by "Ghost Soup", I'm up to the letter G. This could take a while, but I will be finished eventually. By the time next year's archive goes live. Or something.

In other news, I wrote a fic:

Pieces Missing

Dance Academy. After series two. So spoilers.

And received two, both for Maggie Stiefvater's Raven Boys:

Prelude in BMW
In Which Ronan Mocks Gansey After Catching Him in a Private Moment

All in all, I consider my first Yuletide a great success.
