This has been floating around on Tumblr since yesterday or so, and is a pretty fun way to look at something and be like "hang on, there's fic for what now???", bearing in mind that it does turn up 404s a fair bit.

Behold:
THE AO3 RANDOM WORK BUTTON
In Copperbadge's dream, the game was that whatever work you got indicated your new fandom assignment, but that's a bit of a steep ask. What if instead we used the random button to leave encouraging comments on random works?

Obviously I don't know how exactly the things are generated, but assuming it's just a pretty-random number in between 1 and however many URLs there are... is it really te case that in the long run, more than half of fics are deleted? Why?? I mean, there are all sorts of reasons a person might delete a fic, on an individual level, but it does require a certain level of... decision-making, you know? You have to do it on purpose... and the whole point of the archive was to be a permanent home for stuff. It's a little bit disturbing to realize how much of it ends up being taken down.
