A fic!

So being a disorganised person, I did not do things correctly at Yuletide last year (I still posted a fic, don't worry, I'm not terrible, but it was not timely), so here is the NYR fic I have written in order to redeem myself.

The source canon can be found here and is a small and lovely thing you might enjoy regardless of whether you read my fic or not. Featuring mermaids, women in love, and science.

I'm very sorry. Your letter's coming, I swear it is. If you're a busy person and you want to get started right now, don't worry, I am super easy to please; write whatever the hell you like, but it'll be up probably tomorrow.

ETA: There is a letter now! I hope it helps you.

Hello friend!

Sorry this is a little late. Having a job is weirdly exhausting??

Anyway, very glad to see you here: you have good taste in small fandoms, and I’m lucky enough to have scored you as my writer. Thank you very much. The important thing you need to know here is that I am spectacularly easy to please. Write me a story in any of these fandoms, and I will love you. This letter is absolutely optional. Consider it a collection of prompts and ideas, rather than a recipe for pleasing me. But if prompts and ideas and me rambling about my fandoms if what you're after, you are in the right place.

Feel free to browse both this journal and my tumblr (alasse-irena.tumblr.com) if you want to get to know me. I've tried to make public everything that isn't just me blogging to-do lists and day-to-day life. I don't post a lot of original content on Tumblr, but I do chatter in the tags a bit.

Okay, general things first, with important parts bolded for those who hate walls of text.

I have no serious triggers, but there’s a couple of things I’d prefer you didn’t write: soulmates AUs, daddy kink, or A/B/O. Also, if you avoided plots that centre around embarrassment or miscommunication, that would be delightful.

Feel free to browse my Tumblr, if you want to get to know me better. Feel free to message Tumblr user doeskin-pantaloons if you need to check if I’d like something. She’s my sister, and she will guard your secrets with her life.

Things I like: Character-driven stories. People you never expected to become friends being friends. Happy endings, and bittersweet endings. I like characters who support each other and talk to each other. Conversely, terrible unhealthy power dynamics. But on a fundamental level, I am all about character interaction.

There are a couple of places where I’ve specifically mentioned romance or sex between two characters in my request. Read those requests with this in mind: Romance is not a requirement for me, let alone porn. If you have an excellent idea that involves filthy sex, go ahead - that would be delightful - but if it doesn’t come up, or it’s not your thing, don’t feel like you have to shoehorn it in for me. As much or as little as you and your characters are comfortable with.

I really like AUs. Every AU. Any AU. Alternate worlds, one-single-change-wreaks-vast-repercussions AUs, crossover AUs. I am literally always up for an AU, no matter how weird and far removed from the source you think it is. Keep the characterisation consistent, and I will be there with you. Seriously. Go to town on this, if it’s your kind of thing.

Ballets Russes RPF, Transistor (video game), Yuri!! on Ice )

So, I hope that helps some? I'll love whatever I get, and I love you, and good luck with the writing.

Alasse Irena

So I have found myself talking about Doctor Who several times in the last week or so - mostly anguished and emotional conversation about what we would want from the Time War and about the delightful fucked-up Doctor/Master situation, and anyway, we are maybe planning to do a bit of rewatching.

So I am intrigued to see whether what worked so well for high-school me will hold up to the adult version, who is probably more discerning and maybe has less time for angsty manpain (I might by deceiving myself about this; it may work just as well).

Anyway, reports to come on that.

In other news, I missed nominations for Yuletide, but I'm assuming there'll be enough I'm interested in to sign up anyway.

Yes, it is still December in my heart. This one is for [personal profile] the_rck, who asked, "If you can do it without giving away what you're writing, what are your favourite things about doing Yuletide?" I am far too late to worry about giving anything away, so here goes.

One excellent thing about Yuletide, I think, is that it encourages me to write things, and better yet, encourages me to write things that might not find an audience if I'd written them out of Yuletide season, or that I might not even have thought of, except that I saw someone's prompt about them. This Yuletide I spent a great deal of time reading primary sources about the Punic Wars, and begging my sister, who has studied it at uni, to pass on resources and juicy details. I am lucky she is an impassioned supporter of the Roman Republic, and saw it as an opportunity to preach her cause. Anyway, I came out of it with a lot of exciting knowledge, a new fandom, and a fic people seemed to like, so that was delightful.

One of my other favourite things about Yuletide is the things people nominate and write for which are not conventional fandoms - artworks, poetry, twitter accounts, TV ads, memes, Ghost Soup: Infidel Blue, Peter Capaldi's Eyebrows Anthropomorfic... The hard-boiled-detective-meets-Greek-mythology fic. Sleeping Beauty in space. Like, on the one hand, Yuletide is about tiny fandoms and forgotten fandoms, but it's also about finding things that were never meant to be stories, and making them into stories.

I enjoy Dear Author Letters a lot. I like writing my letter, and reading other people's. People put a lot of thought into them, and it's interesting seeing people articulate what's great about their fandom, or even what they hate and want to see changed. And I mean, sometimes you read someone's letter and find that the thing you really love about that fandom is a thing they barely even noticed, or a thing they hated, or vice versa. But because it's all about tiny fandoms, and a lot of people get involved who aren't very active in fandom the rest of the year, it's a whole lot of new voices writing exciting meta, and an audience for that fic you never knew you wanted to write until to read that prompt, all wrapped up together, and it's great.

Also - it's really lovely to have fic written for you, and people do such a fantastic job of it!

Happy somewhat-late New Year to all you people!

A lot of people seem to do New Year's Resolution type posts at this time of year, but this is not really my thing. Although, I have seen some fun reading challenges around, and the fandom snowflake thing, so I do intend to do certain things in the new year. For the sake of accountability, it is worth posting here that I am in the middle of writing a silly university AU Attack on Titan fic. Aside from Yuletide, I am shockingly bad at finishing things, so maybe this will help.

(Speaking of, does anyone have any fanfic challenges or exchanges they want to recommend or promote to me? I like the feeling of actually finishing and uploading fic.)

And now we are on to Yuletide, time for my shockingly late reveal post!

I wrote three fics this year, which is more than any of the other times I've participated.

Another Opportunity (2903 words) by Alasse_Irena
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Ancient History RPF
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Hannibal Barca, Scipio Africanus
Additional Tags: Reincarnation
Summary: In which it takes several lifetimes for Hannibal and Scipio to arrange a dinner date. Reincarnation AU.

This was my actual assignment. It was a great deal of fun to write, and I did a tonne more research than was strictly necessary, and I was very anxious when I uploaded it, but my recipient seems to have liked it a lot, and so do other people, so now I get to feel proud and relieved.

Having made my last minute edits to that one about twelve hours before the collection opened on Christmas Day, I thought it might be fun to spend the remaining time fulfilling a few other prompts. I'd had good intentions of writing more than one fic this year, and I am very surprised to say, considering the twelve hours (during which I also slept some), that I succeeded.

This next one was for a RL friend who, hilariously, does not yet seem to have realised that it was me who wrote it for her, even though before I did I watched the last ten episodes or so while on IM with her. It'll hit her eventually. Or I'll have to tell her.

The Muse's First Job (1312 words) by Alasse_Irena
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: @WorstMuse
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Worst Muse (@WorstMuse), Original Character
Summary: In which Worst Muse inspires a struggling author.

I made a post a little while ago, before reveals, where I recommended the entire @WorstMuse category to people. This was a slightly awkward thing to do, as it included my own fic, but I wasn't allowed to tell anyone yet. So, consider that recommendation to refer to all the other fic in this fandom. For some reason it turned out to be an absolute gem of a fandom.

So, because I was such an enthusiastic little creature about the fic I received, I posted about them before Madness was up.

Here is a link to my last delightful little treat, which is every bit as good as the two I received from the main collection: The Still-Wet Ink of Our Convictions

As for myself, I wrote three fics, about which I am not allowed to speak for another few days, of course. I am terrible at secrets, and like talking about my writing, so this is me biting my tongue for a little while.
But anyway, I have had a truly excellent Yuletide!

In other news, my sister and a friend and I have been watching Shingeki no Kyojin. Although I am still a little bit iffy about my ability to take seriously an enemy which is comical-looking giant people with an insatiable hunger for flesh, the show is doing a devastatingly brilliant job at making me cry about the characters anyway. Traumatised child soldiers! People who are really really good at their jobs! Tons of friendships and a total lack of romantic subplots! Melodrama! (Episode 18 was terrible. Other than that I have no complaints. Well, loads of complaints, but the good kind, where I'm really emotionally invested.)

So I am not doing a fantastic job with the December meme, but I shall get on those, I swear. In the meantime, here is an excited Yuletide update from me.

I received two fics (and one in the Yuletide Madness collection, which I have thus not yet seen), both as delightfully and well-written as I could've possibly hoped.

Five Times Howl and Calcifer Came to an Agreement (and One They Didn't)

Onyx and Bone

Thank you to both of you, and I look forward to knowing who you are!
alasse_irena: Photo of the back of my head, hair elaborately braided (Default)
So today appears to be the first of December, which means that a) I should get on with my Yuletide assignment if I want to write any treats, and b) the December meme is starting today. There is still lots of room in my December if anyone else wants me to talk about a thing. I'm on my phone, so I can't provide you with a link, but it's on my journal a few posts down...

It also means that c) I failed Nanowrimo, but I was not all that invested in my novel, so that would be the problem, and also the reason for lack of disappointment on this front.
alasse_irena: Photo of the back of my head, hair elaborately braided (Default)
My assignment goes delightfully well. I have planned it out, done a tonne of research, and it looks like it will be a lot of fun to write. I wish I could say more, but I am shockingly bad at remembering who I've given access to what, and even if I'm careful, who knows what you may deduce, so my lips remained sealed.

In terms of treats, I have one I've sort of half written - we'll see where that goes -and good intentions of having a look at a few others. There's still plenty of time, right? Usually I'm to busy scrambling to finish off my assignment to write treats, but I am hoping to do better this year.

In other news, a friend gave me a second-hand smartphone, so I am at last in the Modern Era with the rest of you.
alasse_irena: Photo of the back of my head, hair elaborately braided (Default)

It has occurred to me that it's going to take me a while to go through all the Yuletide fic and make a complete list of recs, so I'm posting the start of it now.

Ten recs, in various fandoms )

So there you go. As you can see by "Ghost Soup", I'm up to the letter G. This could take a while, but I will be finished eventually. By the time next year's archive goes live. Or something.

In other news, I wrote a fic:

Pieces Missing

Dance Academy. After series two. So spoilers.

And received two, both for Maggie Stiefvater's Raven Boys:

Prelude in BMW
In Which Ronan Mocks Gansey After Catching Him in a Private Moment

All in all, I consider my first Yuletide a great success.

I thought it might be a good thing if next year, my yuleperson would have something to peruse to get an idea of myself and the things I like, because as it stands, I've been pretty much an internet non-person since my ill-fated blog attempt of 2007 (it's still out there somewhere), and my forays into Harry Potter fanfiction from the same period (also still out there).

So, hello everyone. We'll see how I go.
